The short version
No account to open, no newsletter, no advertising network, no analytics of our own, and no cookies set by us. The pages are static files, so nothing you read, search or click here is recorded by us. The two exceptions are external — the GetYourGuide widgets and booking links — and both are described below.
What we do not collect
We do not ask for your name, email or location, and there is no form on the site. We do not build profiles, fingerprint browsers or embed pixels from advertising and social platforms. Typefaces and images are served from this site, not a third-party network.
The search box
The search index is a plain file on this site, fetched by your browser the first time you use the box. Matching happens in your browser and what you type is sent nowhere. One caveat: if you arrive on a link carrying a ?q= query, those words are part of the address, and addresses can appear in a hosting provider's log.
The near-me finder
The finder on the near-me page uses your browser's geolocation, and only if you press the button and allow the prompt. The coordinates sort the port list by distance inside the page, then go when you leave: they are not sent to us, stored or shared. Refusing the prompt leaves the list unsorted, and the page still lists every port by drive time.
GetYourGuide widgets and booking links
GetYourGuide is our only booking partner, and two things involve it.
The live availability tiles are its widget, loaded from its own domain only when you scroll near one. Once loaded, the widget can set and read its own cookies, and what happens inside it is governed by GetYourGuide's privacy and cookie notices, not by this page. Block it and the tile stays empty while the rest of the page works. Every page also asks your browser to open a connection to that domain in advance, which makes your IP address visible to it before any widget loads.
Booking links pass through a /go/ redirect that adds our partner and campaign codes, so a booking can be credited to us, then sends you on. We set nothing along the way; from the moment you arrive there, GetYourGuide's terms and notices apply.
Hosting and server logs
The site is delivered by a hosting provider that may keep standard access logs — IP address, time, page, browser string — for security and to serve the files. We do not use them for analytics or profiling.
If you write to us
Mail sent to hello@whale-watching.ca, the address on this page, reaches an inbox we read. We keep your message as long as the matter takes, use it for nothing else, and never sell or rent it. Please do not send booking details, payment information or anything sensitive: we cannot act on a booking anyway.
Your rights in Canada
Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) sets ten fair information principles — consent, limiting collection, safeguards and individual access among them — published by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. If we hold personal information about you, realistically an email you sent, you may ask for it in writing; the Commissioner's guidance is that an organization should answer within 30 calendar days at minimal or no cost, with an extension of up to 30 more days in limited circumstances. You may also ask us to correct a factual error or delete what we hold.
Your rights in the EU and EEA
Readers in the European Union and the European Economic Area have the rights the European Commission describes: access and a free copy, correction, erasure, portability, and objection to a use. Ask at the same address.
Complaints
Tell us first: the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada asks you to raise a concern with the organization before filing a complaint with it. After that, Canadian readers can go to the Commissioner, and readers in the EU or EEA to their national data protection authority.
Changes
If this notice changes, the date at the top changes with it. The terms of use cover the rest, and about explains how the pages are built.
