A private whale watching tour is not a premium version of the scheduled trip. It is the same boat, the same crew and the same legal distances, sold by the hull instead of by the seat. That single change in the pricing unit is what makes charters worth understanding: at four people they are an expensive indulgence, and at twelve they are often cheaper than buying tickets.

Reading a per-boat price
The listing price is the boat. Your job is one division and two questions: how many people does this hull legally carry, and what does the operator add on top?

Prince of Whales marks every fare "+ Taxes & Fees"; we have added 5% GST only, because the fee component is not published. On price alone the private zodiac in Victoria wins at about ten passengers — and the boats seat roughly twelve. Below that you are buying privacy, not a discount.
Nanaimo shows the other side of the same arithmetic. A private open or semi-covered boat there is C$2,400 in our feed, while a scheduled Nanaimo seat is C$250. Divide C$2,400 twelve ways and you are at C$200 each, under the scheduled ticket and with the whole deck to yourselves. Divide it nine ways and you are at C$267, and the charter has stopped making financial sense.
The per-hour model is the exception worth watching. Aboriginal Journeys in Campbell River sells private trips at C$450 per hour with a four-hour minimum and a maximum of eight guests, which is C$1,800 for the shortest booking it will take, plus tax and a 10% fuel surcharge on every tour. At eight people that is around C$225 each before the surcharge — competitive with a scheduled seat, on a boat that takes only ten and runs one departure a day.
What operators publish for the whole boat
Direct rates are the reference point, because they tell you what the boat is worth before any platform sees it.

Two more fleets sell charters without publishing a figure. Eagle Wing's 12-guest monohull Serengeti is listed as its charter boat, and Jamie's Whaling Station charters the Lukwa in Tofino for 12 to 45 guests. Both want a phone call, and both are worth one if your group is awkwardly sized.

For a wedding party, a company day or an extended family. Brier Island charters its 50-passenger Mega Nova at C$2,500 before 14% HST, which is C$50 a head at capacity.

A private zodiac does not relax the restrictions that make zodiacs hard for some passengers. Prince of Whales allows pregnant passengers on its half-day catamaran and cruiser tours but not on the zodiac, whoever booked it, and Brier Island's zodiac weight window of 90 lb to 350 lb is a safety limit rather than a policy. If the reason you are chartering is that someone in the group cannot manage a scheduled boat, charter the covered one.
What to ask before you pay a deposit
Charters are sold by email and phone, which means the terms are whatever you agreed. Get these in writing.
How many people does the price cover, and how many will be comfortable? Quoddy Link's catamaran is certified for more than 70 passengers and sold at 46 for comfort. Capacity and comfort are different numbers.
What is added at checkout? Fuel surcharges and conservation fees are normal and rarely in the headline: Aboriginal Journeys adds 10%, Campbell River Whale Watching builds a 15% fuel surcharge and a C$5 conservation fee into its all-in prices, and Orca Spirit charges C$4 conservation plus C$10.70 fuel per person even on a free re-ride.
Is there a washroom? On a three-hour trip with children or older travellers this decides the day. Most private zodiacs have none; most covered boats do.
What is the minimum age on a private booking? Often lower than on scheduled departures, sometimes removed. Ask rather than assume.
Does the sighting guarantee apply? Frequently not. Eagle Wing exempts charters and non-retail rates from its whale guarantee; Croisières AML excludes group bookings and tour-operator bookings from its Whale Warranty. If a whale-free trip would be a disaster for your occasion, know in advance that there is no remedy.
What is the cancellation window, and who decides on weather? Private windows are long — seven days at Jamie's, two weeks at Eagle Wing and at Cameron Ocean Adventures — and weather calls are the captain's. Quoddy Link decides about 30 minutes before departure and refunds prepaid tickets in full when it cancels.
Is the vessel Transport Canada certified, and who is the captain? Every reputable operator says so on its own site, and several publish the crew's tickets: Capt. Mark's in Cape Breton lists Small Craft Master, MED A2, ROC-M and Marine First Aid for one of its two captains, and SVOP with the same three for the other. A charter operator that will not tell you what it holds is telling you something.

This matters most in southern British Columbia. The 1,000 m Southern Resident distance is not a guideline an operator can waive for a paying group, and Campbell River Whale Watching publishes its own stricter code on top: 7 knots within a kilometre of any whale, 200 m from killer whales or any whale with a calf, and leaving the area entirely if a killer whale is identified as a Southern Resident.
Charters that are not really boats
Two of these deserve plain language. The Vancouver seaplane day to Victoria at C$757.63 is priced per boat and rated 4.6 from 140 reviews — it is a flight, a whale tour and a city afternoon bundled, and the seaplane is the reason for the price. Harbour Air runs downtown-to-downtown routes between Vancouver Harbour and Victoria Harbour, and Helijet advertises Victoria–Vancouver helicopter fares from C$199 including tax and fees if you would rather buy the transport separately.
The Churchill private safari at C$2,100 is a road safari for polar bears and the Hudson Bay coast, not a beluga boat. If belugas are the point, Sea North Tours charters a zodiac from C$850, and Churchill belugas explains the season.
The Saint Andrews private day from Saint John at C$1,948.92 carries two reviews and a 2.1 rating. We are not going to pretend that is a recommendation. The Bay of Fundy's strongest boat is Quoddy Link Marine's catamaran, which publishes scheduled fares from C$89 and declines to guarantee sightings on principle.
Operators worth reading first
Prince of Whales is the only company that will charter you a boat in Victoria, Vancouver and Telegraph Cove, and it publishes its per-boat prices, which most do not. Jamie's Whaling Station has the largest fleet on the west coast of Vancouver Island and the most flexible private vessel in the Lukwa. The Campbell River operators include the two best small-group charters in the country — Aboriginal Journeys, which caps every tour at eight, and Discovery West, with a single 12-guest covered boat.
If you are searching for private charters and keep landing on American companies, two of them are worth naming. Spirit of Orca charters out of Anacortes, Washington at US$975 for three hours and US$1,950 for six, and Harv & Marv's private tours from Juneau, Alaska start at US$1,150. The verdict
Charter when the head count justifies it, when someone in the group cannot use a scheduled boat, or when the occasion needs the deck. Ten or more people on a covered private boat is a genuinely better deal than ten scheduled tickets; two people on the same hull is a luxury purchase, and an honest one as long as you know that is what it is.
Before you commit, price the scheduled seats on the prices page and decide which hull you want on zodiac or covered boat. Then ask for the guarantee clause in writing, because whale watching charters are where it most often does not apply.
