Campbell River has one large operator and three small ones, and the small ones are where the cheaper seats and the tighter groups are. Eagle Eye Adventures publishes a four-hour zodiac trip at C$199 per adult, Aboriginal Journeys a 3.5-hour covered trip at C$189 with a maximum of eight guests, and Discovery West Adventures a four-hour trip at C$189 on a twelve-seat covered boat. None of them guarantees a sighting.
All three are members of the North Island Marine Mammal Stewardship Association, the regional body behind the local viewing code of conduct — a useful signal on a coast where anyone with a boat can sell a tour. The fourth name you will still find in search results, Discovery Marine Safaris, no longer operates under its own flag.
Eagle Eye Adventures
The largest of the three and the one with the broadest menu: four-hour wildlife trips with whale watching, six-hour whale tours, a two-hour sunset run, a summer eagle show in the tidal rapids, a full-day grizzly expedition into Toba Inlet with Klahoose Coastal Adventures, and a multi-day combination it calls the Historic Mail Flight Combo, flying Corilair floatplanes on the coastal mail and supply run.
Published rates are C$229 adult on the covered boat and C$199 on the zodiac for four hours, with child fares of C$214 and C$179 for ages 3–14; six hours costs C$259 covered and C$244 by zodiac. Taxes are not included and a fuel surcharge may apply; a 50% deposit is taken on anything other than a same-day booking. Departures are 09:00 and 14:00 for the four-hour trips, 11:00 covered or 10:00 by zodiac for the six-hour.
Every boat has a washroom, drinks and snacks are included on all trips and lunch on anything over six hours, all captains are naturalists, and the covered boat Ikaika is wheelchair accessible for guests who can transfer to a seat. One honest constraint: zodiac flotation suits fit up to roughly XXXL, and the company asks larger guests to call before booking rather than be turned away at the dock.
Aboriginal Journeys
Indigenous and family-owned, and by its own and the stewardship association's accounts the longest-running whale-watching company in Campbell River, at close to thirty years. It runs one 27 ft covered high-speed boat with twin engines, an onboard washroom and heater, and an open viewing deck at the stern. Capacity is ten; tours are capped at eight.
Two tours are sold: 3.5 hours at C$189 per adult and five hours at C$239 with lunch, plus C$159 and C$209 respectively for children twelve and under, all before tax and a 10% fuel surcharge. Departures are normally 11:00 daily from 15 April to 20 October — a single slot, so there is no fallback sailing if the weather closes it. Minimum age is five. Private charters are C$450 an hour, four hours minimum.
Two quirks worth knowing: it will collect and drop at Quathiaski Cove if you are staying on Quadra Island, and it bans metal water bottles, large backpacks and tripods on board. Bottled water is provided.
Discovery West Adventures
The newest and smallest of the three: a family-run operation with one custom covered aluminium landing craft, panoramic windows, a heated cabin, an open viewing deck, an onboard washroom and space for twelve guests. It also runs a water taxi, sunset trips, a spring bear and waterfall tour and an eagle show.
Whale trips are listed from C$189 for four hours and C$259 for six, running June to October, with private adventures of three to six hours. This is the one company on the dock with a documented platform presence: the four-hour tour with snacks in the GetYourGuide feed carries Discovery West in the listing's own address, at C$220 — slightly above the direct four-hour price, with the platform's free cancellation attached. Prices are checked regularly.
Discovery Marine Safaris
Treat this name as history. Campbell River Whale Watching states on its own fleet page that the 30-passenger M.V. Tenacious III — built locally by Daigle Marine as a purpose-made whale-watching vessel — was previously Discovery Marine Safaris' primary boat and came into its group with the acquisition. The old domain no longer serves a public site to our checks, and the company is absent from the stewardship association's member list. If a booking page still offers you a Discovery Marine Safaris tour, you are almost certainly buying a Campbell River Whale Watching departure.

Before you pay: the checklist
Ask which boat you are actually on, because two of these companies have a single hull and a mechanical problem means no tour. Ask whether the quoted price includes the fuel surcharge and tax — on a C$189 seat with 10% fuel and 5% GST you are paying about C$218. Ask for the minimum age if you have children, and whether there is a washroom, which is not a given on a four-hour zodiac run anywhere on this coast.
Then ask the only question that separates a four-hour trip from a six: how far the boat expects to go. Orcas in Johnstone Strait are a long way from the marina, and the shorter trips are wildlife cruises with a chance of whales.
