Iceberg Quest Ocean Tours is the sheltered, high-frequency choice in Newfoundland: two-hour narrated cruises from downtown St. John's and from Twillingate, on boats that have both open viewing decks and a heated cabin with washrooms. Adults are C$120 plus 15% HST according to icebergquest.com, which puts a seat near C$138 once tax is added. Book it for icebergs and comfort; do not book it expecting a promise.
What the company actually is
Iceberg Quest describes itself as a family-operated business. Captain Barry Rogers is its president and the captain of the Capo de Espera; the company's own crew page traces him to Twillingate Island and a family line of fishermen. Bookings are handled by Carol Anne Hayes and Maddox, whom the site calls lifelong "Quest'rs". Fleet size and passenger capacity are not published — the tour pages say only "our vessels", plural.
Two docks matter. St. John's sails from the waterfront at Pier 6, 135 Harbour Drive, a walk from the downtown hotels and B&Bs. Twillingate sails from Pier 52 at 52 Main Street, where the company also runs its Canvas Cove Bistro on the same premises. The corporate office is listed at 115 Cavendish Square in St. John's.
Ports, boats and seasons
The St. John's route is a geography lesson as much as a wildlife trip: Fort Amherst, Cabot Tower and Cape Spear seen from the water, then out into the passage where humpbacks feed. Twillingate is the ice port — an outport community on the northeast coast, in the path Greenland's bergs take south. The company's own line is that a large share of its customers do both, and if you are driving the island that is a defensible plan.
Seasons are published clearly. Icebergs normally appear from mid-May to late June; whales normally from mid-June through August; sightings outside those windows are described as not uncommon. Both ports see both. Newfoundland and Labrador's tourism body dates the wider humpback return to May through September, so late June sits in the narrow overlap where ice and whales are both plausible on the same departure — plausible, not promised.
On board you get a fully narrated two hours, open decks, a heated cabin, washrooms, bar service and light snacks for purchase, and live traditional music. Screech-ins are offered at sea. That is a genuinely different product from the open rigid-hull inflatables that dominate the rest of the province — no flotation suit, no spray in the face, and a place to put a toddler when the wind turns.
Peak-season departures are 09:00, 11:30, 14:00 and 16:30 from St. John's and 09:30, 13:00 and 16:00 from Twillingate, subject to change. Early and late in the season the company runs a limited number of sailings and recommends reservations.
What it costs, direct and through a platform
Booked direct, the published rates are C$120 for adults, C$100 for students aged 18–24, C$75 for youth 9–17 and C$65 for children 2–8, with infants under one free — all plus 15% HST. Private charters and group rates are quoted by phone.
The partner catalogue does not sell that two-hour ticket. What it sells is a four-hour St. John's package: hotel pick-up, Cape Spear, Signal Hill and downtown, then the Iceberg Quest cruise. The listing page returned an error to our checks, so we could not confirm the supplier; assume a third-party city-tour company that includes the boat, not Iceberg Quest selling direct. The arithmetic is simple. The boat alone is about C$138 for an adult with tax. The package is C$251 and adds transport, a guide and three land sights you could otherwise drive to in a morning. If you have a car and a free morning, book direct. If you have neither, the package is not unreasonable — and its cancellation terms are better.
What to check before you pay
Three things.
The cancellation policy is strict: 25% of the fare is kept even when you cancel a day ahead, and there is no refund at all inside 24 hours. Groups need seven days' notice and private charters fourteen.
Wind, not rain, cancels. Boats leave rain or shine, but high winds mean rough seas and a reschedule. The company's own recommendation — book the tour in your first days in the province — is the single most useful line on its site, because it is the only way a cancellation still leaves you a second chance.
Dress for a cold deck. Layers, a sweater and a waterproof outer layer; a hat and mittens early in the season. Cabins are heated with room to stash a pack, so bring more than you think you need and take it off.
Rules apply to the skipper as much as to you: Fisheries and Oceans Canada requires at least 100 metres from whales, dolphins and porpoises in these waters, and 200 metres from any animal resting or with a calf, with fines up to $100,000 under the Fisheries Act. A captain who holds position and lets a humpback close the distance itself is doing the job properly.
How it compares
Iceberg Quest is the comfort option, and in Newfoundland that is a niche of its own. For eleven or twelve seats, an open boat and a skipper running photo-identification research, go to the Trinity operators on the Bonavista Peninsula. For puffins at scale, the Witless Bay boats south of St. John's run past North America's largest Atlantic puffin colony. Iceberg Quest beats both on frequency, on shelter and on how little planning it needs — four departures a day from a dock you can walk to.
Verdict
Book it for ice, for families, for a first Newfoundland boat trip and for any day the forecast is marginal. Book it direct unless you want the hotel pick-up and the land sights, in which case the platform package is the cleaner buy for its cancellation terms alone.
